Dozens arrested following rioting in Shuafat
Palestinian sources have reported large numbers of policemen and border policemen were deployed early Monday morning in the Shuafat refugee camp in northeast Jerusalem and parts of the Anata refugee camp.
Five border policemen were wounded Monday afternoon when they were pelted with stones by the local Palestinians, according to the Jerusalem Post. Arab reporters at the scene also sustained injuries.
The combined force arrested eleven Palestinians overnight, conducting house-to-house searches for arms and non-resident Arabs from Judea and Samaria staying in east Jerusalem without work permits. The police and Border Patrol forces then remained in the neighborhood to secure municipal workers who arrived Monday morning to perform maintenance work.
Work proceeded normally until the afternoon, when dozens of Palestinians schoolchildren started hurling rocks at the security forces. Police arrested 25 people on charges ranging from civil disorder to criminal activities, tax evasion and debts to the municipality. Tear gas and stun grenades were used to control the escalating violence.
