Experts map out sites marked for preservation

The Jerusalem Municipality has launched a comprehensive, up-to-date, computerized project to map sites marked for preservation.

Five planning teams were selected to take part in an NIS 500,000 pilot program commissioned by the municipality’s Preservation Department. The teams include experts in various fields, including architectural preservation, botany, history, real estate assessment, economics, geography and photography. Together they will map out and document some 200 buildings and sites designated for preservation.

Lists of sites for preservation have been prepared in past, and some were even incorporated into the city building plans. Over a decade ago the city drew up a list of 5,400 sites and 8,000 buildings marked for preservation. But when the list was posted on the municipality website six months ago, it was found to be not only outdated, but was also legally nonbinding.

Last year the municipality decided to demand Planning Authority officials complete the list and turn it into a binding plan within three years.

The experts working on the project will create comprehensive, detailed maps of neighborhoods, complexes, streets, buildings, facades, monuments and even trees.
