March 15, 2010

Brazilian President Luiz Ignacio (Lula) da Silva invited the president of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to visit his country in order to strengthen scientific ties between the university and educational institutions in Brazil.

The president extended the invitation at a warm and longer than planned meeting today (Monday) in Jerusalem with Hebrew University President Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson, Vice President for External Relations Carmi Gillon, and Associate Vice President for Latin America Joseph Benarroch.

President Lula recalled how he has acted vigorously in his country for the strengthening of higher education and in particular to extend educational opportunities to the less fortunate sectors of the population. He said he realized that the Hebrew University is a leading world institution and would be very happy to have it involved in the furthering of education in his country.

At the end of the meeting President Lula received, as a symbolic act, two facsimiles of honorary certificates that were given to Albert Einstein by Brazilian universities in 1925, the same year that the Hebrew University was founded. Einstein was among the founders of the Hebrew University.

Lula is currently on a three-day visit to Israel, accompanied by three cabinet ministers, 70 businessmen and 40 media personnel.
